Although gamers were certainly bombarded with fewer first person shooter titles this year than in 1998, this was still undoubtedly a great year for the first person shooter. While a few developers saw fit to churn out games so bad it pains us to think of them, a number of excellent titles were released, some blending elements of the horror and RPG genres and others focusing more on multiplayer gameplay this time 'round.
While we'd love to do a top ten for other genres, the overwhelming dominance of the first person shooter over other game categories this year has once more lead us to place the best first person shooters of 1999 head to head in a bloody battle for the first person shooter crown. So here they are, from the direst gaming atrocities of 1999 to the crown kings of quality gaming.

A massive arsenal
Dreary graphics
Horrible movement code and controls
Near mindless enemy AI
Repetitive and uninspiring movement code
Remember this one? Nope, neither did we until we started writing this particular article. We suspect our forgetting was a result of a conscious effort to remove all memory of this horrendously bad game from our minds. While playing the original game, Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, could at times feel like walking through the worst of London smog the enemies looked good and it played pretty well. However, just when it looked like game sequels inferior to their predecessors were becoming a thing of the past Turok 2 decided to prove otherwise in style.
Awful control and movement code, only barely passable graphics, terrible AI and a story more instantly forgettable than that of the Independence Day movie all contributed to a game we only reluctantly played. Soon after though we had to leap into a game of Half-Life just to assure ourselves that good games do indeed still exist. This game is one to buy only if you're short on coffee mug coasters or Frisbees. The only reason it is lucky enough to get 10th place is that there were simply not enough other first person shooters to dislodge it with this year round, which is a shame. Turok 2 doesn't even deserve a place in the bargain bin. Instead it deserves a place in the waste bin.
