Activision and Interplay were the two companies we saw at E3 2000 trying to let players work both sides of the equation in RPGs. Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption, based on the White Wolf role-playing system, will let users operate as player or dungeon master. From a player perspective, Redemption looks like a 3D action game. Players control a party of characters as they adventure through four gothic cities and through 800 years (vampires don’t die easily, and after 800 years, you better believe they’ll know every inch of those cities). But as the dungeon master, a user can set up scenarios, role play the non-player characters when they interact with players, and dynamically place monsters or items in a setting. This should make for some interesting situations where the dungeon master can adjust the difficulty of the game to match player interest, and best of all, it will provide for NPCs that talk in more than menus. Nihilistic says they’re also working to stay true to the paper RPG.
