Remember E3? Remember the lists of games we thought looked promising? We told you how amazing and special they were, but nothing else. You hated us, didn't you? We're sorry, forgive us. We've been busy. Here, let us make it up to you. One of those titles from E3 goes by the name, Oni. We played a bit at E3, talked a bit with Bungie, and we did it all to bring you a bit of information on Bungie's new third person shooter with a twist, Oni.
You play Konoko, a pistol packing, arse kicking, kung fu cop. While Oni is heavily anime influenced, Bungie decided not to make Konoko as "top heavy" as usual. No, she's got the polygons where it counts, in those fists of fury, unlike a certain Lara Croft who will remain nameless.
Like every Bungie game of the last several years, not only will Oni be an action game, it will have a world class plot to boot. The Marathon and Myth series each had among the most engrossing plots ever found in video games, and we expect Oni to continue in this fine tradition.
Did we say action? Oni has tons of it. Their new and innovative game engine combines Virtua Fighter like hand-to-hand with slick shooting, all from a third-person perspective. You can sneak up behind a guard, snap his neck (it's all in the wrist), and use his gun to nail his friend. This combination totally kicks. You're going to love it!
Besides the creation of a whole new genre, Oni is also groundbreaking in its level design. They hired actual architects to design the levels and buildings! Because of this, the Oni environments are amazingly immersive. You really get the feeling of being in a city. You can explore whole buildings, not just predetermined sections. Things feel much more real, and they also look better too. We're really impressed.
What else do you have to look forward to? 24 bit textures, a preconditioned, constrained, neural net AI (meaning a good one), smooth movement through motion blurring and interpolation, and, as always with Bungie, a simultaneous Macintosh and PC release sometime late this year.
We're looking forward to Bungie's latest. Historically, Bungie has always pushed the envelope with killer games. From what we've seen of Oni, they're going to do it again.
