It seems like the Black Isle/Bioware team can do no wrong. Just as you begin to think they’re milking the Baldur’s Gate engine, they come up with something even more incredible. The Neverwinter Nights engine is a completely new 3D foundation. It will come with an editing tool so players can build their own lands and buildings and place monsters and treasures. The third-person perspective in 3D reminded us a bit of Volition’s Summoner, while the role-playing game elements reminded us of Activision’s Vampire. Like Vampire, Neverwinter Nights will allow multiplayer games where there’s a live dungeon master controlling the non-player characters, setting up situations, and helping to tailor the gameplay so the users can have the most fun. It’s a novel concept that hasn’t really ever been implemented before, so we’re interested in seeing how it pans out. If it works, multiplayer RPGs will never be the same.
And that’s not even counting the single player game, which Bioware says will provide 60-100 hours of play. Thanks to the included editor, players can download new user-created modules, limiting the solitaire component of the game only to player imaginations and efforts.
