The date is 2463 AD (did someone at Rage role a dice?) and all is not well. In the quest to find and populate other planets and solar systems, mankind has stumbled across an alien life form (The Charva) -we're not talking E.T here. For some perverse reason The Charva don't take a liking to the 'explorers' (well the Aztecs didn't take to the Conquistadors either) and turn on them and then decide to head for our homeland. Luckily, for the sake of Earth's existence, a few 'experiments' have resulted in a war-machine being created- Expendables. These Expendables represent the cream (ho hum!) of the human warrior gene pool, pure killing machines with no emotion or interest other than shooting on sight. Sounds like a Terminator doesn't it? Alas, the Earth's existence is now put in the hands of 'Expendables'. This is where you come in, taking up the reigns of an Expendable squadron. Dropped in one by one, each space marine that you control has a main aim, which is to blast his (your) way through the hundreds of unknown life forms that have as usual destroyed, killed or eaten the population of Earth, leaving only a few hostages that you must save. Saving the hostages merely involves you walking over them, which might sound easy but in the midst of a cross-fire, 'accidentally' taking one of them out with one of your own shells can happen. Hey 'accidents' do (somewhat frequently) happen…
Instead of merely cashing in on the 'top-down' scrolling genre, Rage Software has cleverly used a specially developed camera control system, which allows the level editors to tightly define the camera behaviour as you move through the world. The camera normally assumes its position behind and overhead relative to the player, but the camera can also be instructed to use fixed positions, drop down behind the player, or follow him around as appropriate to the onscreen action. If anything out of the ordinary happens or a scene occurs that you can't afford to miss the cutaway cameras come into play.
