Throg Blat, lieutenant in the Red Sixers, sits on the scarred bumper of his battle trike doing guard duty. He gnaws happily on a human leg, six days in the sun, bloated and raw, just like his mom used to make. "Too bad about mom," he thinks, "but she sure tastes good."
Throg's troglodyte ears perk up as he hears the whine of an oncoming vehicle. He climbs into his trike, fires up the engine, and brings its weapon systems online. He recognizes the colors of a rival gang, The Corporation, on the hood of the wagon. "Good." he grins. "Dinner."
Redline, from developer Beyond Games and published by Accolade, does have a plot, but we weren't really paying attention to it and neither will you. The year is somewhere around 2060. A free energy source was discovered around 2010 called Orgon. The availability of free energy led to the Earth becoming Utopia like. It also led to the evil oil cartels getting immensely pissed. These cartels, now called the Insiders, perpetrated a terrible plan which left most of the planet devastated and most of the population six feet under. It also left them in control of most of the technology, industry, and health care available. You are not an insider, you're a gang member on the outside, and you're gonna kick some ass.
So what do you do in Accolade's new first person shooter, Redline? Well, to use the quaint vernacular of the game, "you blow crap up." Redline is yet another first person shooter among many. It does, however, have its unique points. There are two modes of play, which you go back and forth freely between. You run around on foot and blow crap up, then you hop in a car so that you can drive around and blow crap up. That is Redline's big innovation over other first person shooters, you get to drive too. It is not exactly a groundbreaking design, but it is actually enjoyable in practice, and a little freshness is better then none at all.
