Just when everyone had conceded the PC golf game crown to the unfinished Links LS 2001, Sierra and developer Headgate Studios have come came out of left field with the surprisingly good PGA Championship Golf 2000. It's easily the most original look at golf in years and has the promise to become an instant classic. While the luster is somewhat tarnished by the presence of a number of serious bugs, the game is still the digital equivalent of a fresh breeze.

First and foremost, PGA 2000 is jammed with options. Custom-designed golfers are based on male or female models and enough gaudy colors and patterns to give Herb Tarlek a panic attack. It took little effort to recreate myself - -sans expanding waistline, of course - -in the game. Aside from the fun cosmetic changes, you can also set your golfer's control method, choice of clubs, ability, handedness, starting tee, and so on. There are 12 different types of play to enjoy once you're set up. These include standards such as Medal (Stroke), Match, Stableford, Four Ball Medal (Best Ball), Scramble, and even Best Ball Ryder Cup. Rounds can be tweaked to change such things as green speed, wind velocity, penalties, mulligans and gimmies, and more.
