Overall battlefield orders can be issued from a 2D map before the actual scenarios begins and then updated as the action unfolds. Units can be issued orders through a series of waypoints, and players can set formations, where to attack, and even when to button-up. This interface offers a wargaming aspect to the simulation and this does mean that Steel Beasts has a bit of learning curve.
Players can jump from either the command or gunner's position, and each offers a completely different view of the battle. As experienced virtual tankers know, it does require jumping from position to position for the best perspective and this can makes things a little tough when the shells start to fly. At times I almost thought I could feel the fear that real tank commanders have said they'd felt when seeing enemy armored units approaching and your turret isn't aiming in the right direction.
While players can play with a mouse or joystick, the game features more hotkeys than the average flight simulation – and a different set of keys for each of the positions. Knowing which position to be in and which keys to press is “key” to success or failure. This is made all the more difficult because no keyboard overlay or “cheat sheet” has been provided, but the manual does offer the necessary commands towards the end of the booklet.
The game's learning curve should easily be mastered with the 39 tutorial missions that are split between the M1 and the Leopard. These provide all the “in the know” tips that an aspiring tank commander would need. Of course diehard wargamers should consider reading Armored Cav by Tom Clancy, a non-fiction book that serves well as a companion piece to this game.
Once players feel confident that they are ready – and if they just want to see some action too – there are 45 single-player missions with settings ranging from the Middle East to Eastern Europe, and with conditions from vast deserts to dense forest. There are also 21 multiplayer missions and a full mission editor to continue the armored combat experience. It is even possible in the multiplayer mode for two players to be in the same tank; one player takes the role of tank commander while the other plays the gunner!
